Show Statement from the Artist:

"This body of work is my way of celebrating Hispanic heritage and Mexican culture through my art. For this year’s show I wanted to create wall hangings with colors and patterns rooted in Mexican culture and design. As I started to gather inspiration, I thought about all the symbols and vibrant staples of my culture growing up and felt pulled to the sarape and it’s bands of vibrant colors and patterns. Historically woven from wool or cotton with distinct regional patterns, the sarape symbolizes identity and pride. It was a staple in our household and even now, I think about this sarape that my older sister has and all of the memories of connection that we have had with it.

Working primarily in clay, I use color and abstract shapes to transform tiles into decorative
wall art. This collection features ceramic tiles with stripes in a vibrant color palette,
referencing the sarape pattern but through my own artistic lens. During the making
process, I selected from my underglazes, shifting diGerent colors around to create unique
combinations within each tile. While no two patterns are the exact same, each one features a thin gold stripe—my signature gold luster detail. The sarape represents Mexican artistry, and I’m honored to use my own artistic practice to celebrate my culture through my craft."
