Growing up, my mother would often say, “Pakistan has the best cotton.” Yet here we were, living amidst the cotton fields of Texas, daydreaming about the cotton of our homeland. The irony of being surrounded by a crop so familiar, yet so distant from the one we longed for, captured the heart of the immigrant experience: a constant pull between the world left behind and the one now inhabited. In the quiet moments between fields, we carried with us the memory of Pakistani cotton—a softness of home that could never be forgotten.
