From the Artist:
"Hanging by a thread presents work made in the last two years culminating the political divide within the United States and my home state of Texas. Born and raised in the Austin area, my background encompasses one often being involved in political events and organizations whose missions can’t help but appear in my work. Key issues addressed in my work include legacies of immigration, reproductive justice, and environmentalism within a Tejana lens. Opting for thread as my weapon of choice I draw upon a longer legacy of women’s work and craft that have often been neglected and overlooked in the history of art while addressing feminist issues.
My hand-embroidered works juxtapose the fragility and softness associated with women and craft to the dire situations we’re facing. The action of hand embroidery for me acts as a diary to document ongoing political events. Issues like immigration and reproductive rights that are under constant threat become visible and hard to ignore on an unconventional canvas like hankies and underwear. By placing these topics on a delicate fabric, I force viewers to come to terms with the harsh realities we face."
